We have an old central air unit that doesn't keep up too well with the Georgia summers. I bought this window unit to help the central air out. It's been working great so far. The main unit doesn't kick on as frequently because the window unit has already gotten the temp down.

    Cools well

This unit replaced a Frigidaire FRA054XT7 which served us well for eight years but had too much mildew built up inside. The FFRE0533U1 is a good air conditioner, but to get the Energy Star label (and $40 rebate in Massachusetts) it defaults to Energy Saver mode every time the unit is restarted -- even if the the user prefers a different mode or temperature or fan speed. This is a problem when trying to sleep, as the entire unit (not just the compressor) turns on and off every 10 minutes. There's a work-around, but it requires a few more clicks of the remote every night. Not a dealbreaker, just annoying.Only other gripe: the hardware included seven 3/4 inch screws instead of the specified 1/2 inch screws.I would buy another Frigidaire but might go with a model that's not Energy Star.

I bought this air conditioner because I needed something compact and quiet to chill my room during the night. I really like the auto temp setting which allows the unit to self shut off when room has hit a specific temp. thus i am never too cold or never too hot. the quietness of the unit is also a plus in that it does not interrupt my slumber.

    Cools, but . . .

Bought this unit since I've had other Frigidaire products that seem to last. It cools fine, and I wanted a light enough unit for a 67 year old to lift and install or remove as the seasons change. I have a couple of complaints. The Remote Control is confusing. From the manual: "If the unit does not receive the remote sensing signal during a maximum of 200 seconds interval, the unit will END remote sensing mode automatically." HUH? Then this: "NOTE: The Remote Sensing function is terminated either by using the Remote Sensing button or the main ON/OFF button on the unit." HUH? I've had to get up in the middle of the night, drowsy, in the dark, and try to push on areas of the unit (no buttons) where I can get signals to either turn the unit on or off, change modes, etc. because the remote control is not doing what I want it to do. Talk about a hassle! (Also, for some reason the remote control is about twice the size of other remotes for larger air conditioners.)Also, if you look in through the louvres, you see a long, little gap between two internal pieces of styrofoam insulation, where you see through to the outdoors. Clearly it is allowing outside air to get into to room thereby defeating the cooling affect.
